Northern Cardinal
This cardinal is the first in my series of backyard birds. It is life-size and made as sturdy as possible in order to travel well. Starting with the head, I focused on the mohawk-like hairstyle characteristic of cardinals.
As I was struggling to come up with how to create the body, I came across a LEGO hot air balloon part that was perfect for the curve of the chest. For articulation, the head and feet can move to allow the bird to stand on a branch or look around.
The design process had some reworking as well. Making the wings, I was more concerned about the shape, but then I decided that color and texture were more important, trying to contrast from the bright red and smooth body. With its bright red color, this bird is an all-time favorite.
In the end I enjoyed working on a realistic, smaller animal model, while still remaining as detailed as possible.
